E Pluribus Unum!

Only a matter of time before Occupy Wall Street made its way to Worcester, MA. Sorta cool actually.

Who better to give us the play-by-play? The NEN&PA award winner, Wusta's very own - T&G, who printed its obligatory inanities about the disenfranchised - students and the unemployed - peacefully occupying the Worcester Common on a lovely sunny Sunday afternoon. Democracy in action - E pluribus unum!

Um... we see the peons, but where are the polits? So where was Mayor Joseph O’Brien yesterday, and Councilor Barbara Haller, our sitting pseudo-progressives? Someone forget to tell Joe about a demo? Probably not worth his while because no minorities were involved. We counted 3 in the T&G photos – not enough? Ironic, when a bunch of white folks hit the streets, Joe’s noticeably missing. Haller too - busy tinkering with her chicken coop last we heard.

Hey this is class warfare, everybody in the trenches! Notably missing was Worcester's Black and Hispanic population. Perhaps they saw no reason to show up because they already got their share of the pie – government largess. And where were Bill Coleman and Sarai Rivera? Noticeably missing of course.

Where were the poseurs from Womag? Chasing down Mike "Mr. Civil Disobedience" Benedetti most likely - Mike, Mike, got a minute. What's this all about? We're thinking of doing a cover story on you - Mike Occupies Worcester. We'll make you a star. You got an agent? Or the crack reporters (aka tools of the system) from the T&G - Clive McFarlane and Dianne Williamson? No one thought to invite them? Or they couldn't be bothered? Most likely preferring to look down on the assembled riff raff from their corporate offices. In any case, they’ll have their stories ready to print by tomorrow, that is after they make a few phone calls soliciting anecdotes from Worcester's disenfranchised. Noticeably missing of course.

What no tweets from Councilor Kate Toomey or Mayor Joe? Heck we’re 3 weeks away from an election. Where were the city council candidates? The school committee candidates? Noticeably missing of course. Most noticeably missing is Tracy Novick.

And what about our neighbors who are The System - the school teachers, the city hall clerks, the DPW guys, the WPD, and the WFD? They can't be bothered. Why should they? They already got their piece of the pie secured. Noticeably missing of course and it’ll stay that way.

And where was our liberal diva Rosalie Tirella? Noticeably missing of course. And where were the cameras from the WCCA? Noticeably missing of course. What's the point of showing up if ya can't panhandle the crowd. Or the folks from TV-3? Can't be bothered, Sunday's their day off. WCRN just across the street - they don't work on Sundays either.

Desperately seeking attention in the middle of it all was local Bible Thumper himself, Mike Benedetti, busy calling around trying to let everyone know he’s already on The Common - ready for his photo op.

So, another lovely Fall Sunday afternoon in picturesque Worcester, Massachusetts. A community if ever there was one.

And where was Will? Ahem, had guests...

Welcome to Wusta!

Sad state of affairs here. Even the library is closed - and its the hottest thing going around here.

Heck all Wusta is closed 365.

Oh woe is us.

Channel 3 was at the Common on Sunday afternoon as was Jeremy Shulkin from WorcesterMag (http://www.worcestermag.com/blogs/dailyworcesteria/Occupy-Worcesters-first-General-Assembly-131456353.html).

BG dude, you lose your way on the internet highway again?

Finally a spokesman for the media. Well, sort of. You defending the media or impartially trying to set the record straight. Nothing personal, but like big deal.

I didn’t see them in the T&G photos and if they were there, they likely showed up for 3 minutes got a quote from Beneditti and left. Gotta love our local media eh? All the news that fits in 30 seconds or half-page filler.

Isn't it always the same culprits doing their worn out dog-n-pony shows for the media? Where were the real locals - candidates, unions etc. MIA.

And what did Occupy achieve? Set agendas? They just wanted headlines – media readers have already turned their backs on Occupy, calling it a farce - brats and losers.

Occupy is an event without the event.

Real reporting would go beyond the typical superficial treatment, perhaps change minds. What’s journalism for? Just page filler for womag and T&G.

I wonder where ICT was? Why don’t you do some stuff for Rosie? Help her boost her stats.

Um…not that anyone cares, were you there? I wasn’t there – too busy.

I honestly hope something comes out of this. America has to change.

Funny that Brian Goslow thinks it's more important to clarify media presence at Sunday's event when he should be here writing about the Occupy Worcester movement. What is it that he doesn't understand?

Hey Sandra D., welcome to Wonderland. Got a bone to pick with BG eh?
I myself am perplexed that his sole contribution is a clarification - defense of the media when he should be in the trenches.
I expected more from our local media tools. Sorry BG, but you are.

Looks like the paper of record is giving Occupy Worcester some credit for something other than two meetings this week:

http://www.telegram.com/article/20111012/NEWS/110129635

The T&G was present on Sunday for about a half hour, Channel 3 for a bit longer.

As for your 'minority count' per pictures in the paper, you're off by a bit. The pictures weren't representative of the whole crowd....after all, they missed me!

What's your obsession with minorities?

Will W. W. said...

Sean Dacey out occupying Wusta? Very cool dude. Fact is, we're all the 99%, but they won't admit it. Sumptin about class consciousness.

You sticking up for the media? If so, then shame on you SD, or trying to be impartial? I thought you were like a renegade blogger?

Obsession w/minorities? Define minority? Racial? Using the generally accepted definition, statistically they're addressed like in 5% of the postings here.

But it seems that in Wusta they're almost a majority, at least when it has to do with government largess. So I guess that makes me a racist eh?

I was just clarifying your speculations. I didn't get the chance to talk to the media, mostly because I don't want to.

As for 'minorities', I'd say they made up about 10% of the audience. I didn't take a survey.

Will W. W. said...

Hey SD, speculations you say? Good try dude. I have photographic evidence. Where's your proof?

Whats up this weekend? Maybe ya got time to do another occupy? This time you can occupy Q's front yard. He needs the support. Maybe someone can hold out a coffee can for donations. Call yourselves Q's heroes.

Hey, get Q to dress up in his Sgt. Schultz uniform and wave at the passerbys.

Ok, seriously. The old man's a fool - he stands on principle? Smarter ways to do it.

What's a better source? Second hand viewing of photographs of a portion of the crowd, or someone who was actually there?

Occupy Worcester will be marching from Clark at 3pm this Saturday to the Common and have another rally at 4pm. You should come out and see what's actually happening in this City without the filter of the T&G or your preconceived notions.

As for Q, he's protesting a silly city ordinance, and he's probably going to win if he sticks it out for the long run. I don't say this very often, but Q's right. I wasn't one of the neighbors to complain.

Q can't use the Shultz costume, Herm Cain's got it this weekend. Nine, Nine, Nine!
