Kohl's Coming to Worcester Despite High Taxes

The T&G reported last week that a new store is coming to Worcester. A department store no less - just what we need. Goodwill was getting tired anyway.

Imagine that, a new business is coming to Worcester despite one of the highest commercial tax rates in central MA. Seems the naysayers were all wrong about the effects of tax rates on city's economy.

I wonder what Mayor Joe Petty has to say about that considering he's one of the naysayers. Or wonder what our local business maven Beth Proko (Worcester Citizen's for Business chief-propagandist) or the Buffoons from the Chandler Business Assoc. have too say?

Who really cares, all they know is how to twist facts.

Someone has to pay the overhead
and i hate to say by the looks of
things it's not an exclusive
situation. I realized and
it's still effecting me is how run
down Woosta is., you really notice it
when you drive towards Boston.
Hampering the city's homeowners is not the answer it's the last resort
of some landlords or CPO's that they too many have to lower their standard of living a bit......F.D.

The supposed self proclaimed Warren Buffets of Worcester have shown their true colors over the past few weeks. The offer little substance and enjoy engaging in pissing matches.

If this was a real business association in a real city they would have all been forced to resign years ago.

The sad fact is that Fat Paul and RANTdull are cheering for even Kohls to fail .In truth the both hate this city especially Paul.

They get some sick pleasure to see business fail. Its like when people have to strangle themselves to get off.

The fact is every time a business goes bust its blamed on the city's high tax rate. People like Beth Proko from WCB use it to argue that taxes is the culprit. Proko has no credibility.

How about the fact that the business owner is the culprit for a multitude of reasons.

I've said this before, Proko/WSB uses lies to sway the argument in their favor. Look at their site, she whines about the businesses that died or left, but intentionally will not mention new incorporations. Need I mention that Proko is a used car salesperson.

The fact is Petty, Russell, Ruston et al will use the same lies to push his agenda.

State corporate income tax went down this year. But rest assured business owners will continue to whine.

Another piece of information for your readers Will. Bill Randell and Tony Economu were founding members of the Worcester Citizens for Business along with Beth Proko.

Make no mistake, business rates will go down and homeowner taxes will go up. This tells it all:

Staff appointments
Mayor-elect Joseph M. Petty has named Michael S. Lanava as chief of staff. Mr. Lanava will be coming to City Hall from the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce. In his most recent position, Mr. Lanava was the chamber's director of government affairs and public policy. Before going to the Chamber of Commerce in 2004, Mr. Lanava served as a project manager for the Worcester Business Development Corp.

Hey F.D., downtown is a horrible looking place. With city hall the center piece of. Its a nice old building for sure. Go inside, smell the air. Recognize it? It's the smell of... stinky toilets.

Hey Beanie! The buffoons from CBA have are useless. Wonder what they're contribution to Wusta has been over the last 6 years. Nothing on their site. Opps, they managed to get a couple bike stands setup on taxpayers dime.

Zed, the fact that Lanava worked for the CC, who we know have contributed nothing to the betterment of the city, except issue the same annual report year for year, Lanava has no track record of any accomplishment at the CC. He's a 33 year old bureaucrat and we all know what bureaucrats contribute.

Look at Petty, not one mentionable accomplishment in 10 years. So Petty hires a baby-bureaucrat to run his office while he's at work.

Lanava will be presenting the usual CC propaganda to the council to entice them to the dark side.

Why am I not convinced that raising my taxes is gonna make a difference to Wusta's an economy.

The city, state, country, world is in a recession and they want to raise taxes?

Lower it and they will come? Ha!

Sounds like simple math to me.

1. Raise residential tax rate and I
have less to spend eating out,
retail, travel etc. My budget
now is focused on buying gas
and paying utilities.

2. People move because they can no
longer afford property taxes,
thus no extra $$ for the
commercial taxed business owners
getting a tax break.

3. Less people in Worcester means
reduced #'s of police and fire.

I do think there should be a tax break for both commercial and residential taxpayers alike.

My solution, provided the unions accepts it, is an across the board 5% income reduction for all city employess (were at 1200 some
employees now making $79,000
according to the current salary check in the ICT). A mandatory 5% reduction for two years should be long enough to see if it attracts new biz.

Just a thought.

Hey WR, in a perfect world... unfortunately our world is infected with greedy unions.

Offsetting that against commercial taxes is not gonna cut it. We're in a recession, only big companies have the cash and patience to wait it out.

Fannie, forfeit? Never. Look, we got a double dipping mayor; the whole governmental employment system is fraunt with dippers like Petty.

Listen. Petty takes the mayor's salary, hires a guy to do the job and just shows up once a week at council - gets paycheck. Yes, I overly simplified it. But essentially that's the scam.

Taxation is about the ability to pay. It was never about fairness.

I know of three retired couples that undersold their homes and moved ( two to Florida and one already had a home in Arizona). They would have liked to stay in MA close to the kids and grandkids, but could no longer afford the standard of living in MA.

If the ability to pay is going to be the standard ,I think Worcester is in for a surprise. People will and are willing to move and undersell their homes if possible.
What does that leave...those w/ subsidized housing, food stamps etc?

Who are the gentrified folks that will take the place of those moving out?

We'll see.

Hey WR, ability to pay... I'm referring to US tax Code. Here in Wusta its different story - pay and shut up.

I'll repeat my argument, businesses do not pay taxes. They factor the tax in the price. The consumer pays.

There are those businesses who'll argue, that makes them uncompetitive. In a sense, yes, but not the businesses that populate Wusta.

What's going to happen is a nothing more than a transfer of wealth. Pure greed.
